What are the most common causes of duplicate contacts?

When using the Contacts Sync app, please make sure that you don't have a Google contacts account enabled in your iPhone Settings.  If you do, it can lead to duplicates as your Google contacts will essentially be added to your iPhone twice: once in Google and once in iCloud/iPhone.  Please see this article for more info:

It's also possible that you have duplicates within your Google account itself.  See this article for instructions on how to correct it:
